(This works across lots of apps, but keep in mind Netflix shows won’t appear here.) Make the most of the TV app Jared Newman / IDG When you highlight the TV app, you’ll see a row with your most recently-watched movies and shows. Click “Top Shelf” in this menu so it says “Up Next,” then return to the home screen. Start by making sure the TV app has a spot in the top row, then head to Settings > Apps > TV. ![]() If you’d rather just skip straight to the app grid, head to Settings > Remotes & Devices, then click “TV Button” so it says “Home Screen” instead of “Apple TV app.” You can still access the TV app through an icon on the home screen.Īdd “Up Next” to your home screen Jared Newman / IDGĮven without the TV app, you can still quickly access movies and shows you’re currently watching straight from the Apple TV home screen. From there, you can press the Home button again to view your master list of apps. I’ve found that Netflix, Paramount+, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu all do a fine job showcasing movies or shows to watch. Unfortunately, not all apps take advantage of this feature, so you might want to dedicate the top shelf to those that do. On Apple TV, your top row of apps get special treatment, with the ability to highlight content directly on the home screen. Combined with Wake Apple TV and Set Playback Destination, this can be used to AirPlay the next episode of your show right away on the Apple TV – get the shortcut here. This is particularly useful for taking advantage of donated actions from apps like the TV app – once you start a TV show like Ted Lasso, the TV app will add a "Resume Ted Lasso" action to the Suggestions section of Shortcuts. The last action isn't technically part of the Apple TV Remote group, but it's useful to know about – Set Playback Destination lets you select an Apple TV and cast your video or music to the specified Apple TV. Bonus: Set Playback Destination for AirPlay TURN TV OFF WITH APPLE REMOTE SERIESUsing Choose From Menu and multiple instances of Open App can also give you a way to select from a series of options and open the corresponding app that you've set up ahead of time – you could have one shortcut that opens every app and game on your Apple TV. Set Light/Dark Mode is another action available to customize the experience that's most useful alongside the Switch User Account account – if one person prefers to have light mode and another dark mode, they can switch to their own profile and also change the appearance in their own dedicated shortcuts. That means, since Siri already knows who is speaking, the Switch User Account account can be used before other Apple TV Remote actions and make sure the Apple TV is set to the right person who's speaking – if my girlfriend asks to open the TV app, it can just switch to her account at the same time and her Up Next will be shown. ![]() This is likely most useful if you have multiple family members who want to utilize Shortcuts to control Apple TV – since HomePod shortcuts run as Personal Requests through the individual person's iPhone, they'll need their own shortcuts to use the HomePod to control the Apple TV.
